Apple Picking at Ya Ya’s Orchard

apple picking

As soon as I see the apple orchards open up I am ready for everything fall. Granite, the apple orchards start opening at the beginning of August here in Colorado. The apple picking season starts early here and while it still feels like summertime. The first orchard that I visited this season was Adam’s Apple Orchard in Ault, Colorado. I desperately wanted to pretend that it was fall but it was still 98 degrees outside. However, the heat and the beating sun still did not stop me from picking 2 large bushels.

Afterward I of course rushed home, turned on the oven in this wretched heat, and made pumpkin apple bread. Embracing autumn in August may be a tad early. But I never like missing out on a chance to pick fresh fruit no matter what it is. And one visit to an apple orchard is never enough. Once I went through the 2 large bushels, with lots of baking, and a generous apple (or two) a day. I had to head to Ya Ya’s Orchard in Longmont, Colorado for the second round of locally grown Colorado apples.

Ya Ya Farm and Orchard

So yes I did get a little excited for fall prematurely this year. But now that it is officially fall I am ready to do all the fall things. I have been dying to visit Ya Ya’s Farm and Orchard for some time now but I don’t get to drive up to all the farms in Northern Colorado as often as I would like. I wish I could do it every day. But this year I made it a priority to visit Ya Ya’s Orchard before the snow hit. And what a lovely and charming farm it is. You must visit as often as you get the chance. One thing to remember is you do have to sign up for u-pick apples well in advance if you decide to take the trip up. But they do have a lot of other fall activities. And pre-picked apples and cider donuts that they sell in their farm shop.

I did not do the apple picking here but I still had a lot of fun visiting. It is really nice to have a chance to connect to my community here in Colorado and escape to a more rural and peaceful world. I did stock up on all the pre-harvested apples from Ya Ya’s Farm. And as soon as I burn through them I will continue to support some of my other favorite Colorado apple farmers at my favorite farmer’s markets. As much as I like to visit all the U-pick farms in Colorado, they can be hard to come by and it is always quite a long journey to get to them. Then once the snow hits it means the end of the growing season for most farmers here in Colorado.

Reasons I Love Autumn

There is nothing more special than a perfect autumn day. Whether it is spending the day picking apples. Attending fall festivals and fall farmers markets. Stopping at a pumpkin patch and corn maze for a little frightful fun. Or simply staying in for a movie marathon watching all the fall and (non-scary) Halloween movies.

And you can’t forget all the cozy cooking with yummy soups and warm baked goods. I love getting to try new recipes when it comes to all the seasonal squash popping up at the farmers market this time of year. I just bought a butternut squash, delicata squash, and acorn squash to experiment with. And I can’t wait to bake all kinds of apple and pumpkin things too. Autumn Burgundy and Plaid

The food and the activities are not the only things to love about fall. The clothes get me extra excited every year too. Cozy sweaters, coats, long dresses, skirts, tights, and boots. All the plaid, corduroy, wool, and tweed. All the autumn colors. Burgundy is always a fall color I fall in love with this time of year and it is my favorite way to wear red.

I knew I needed to buy a burgundy turtleneck and I was lucky enough to find this one at the thrift store for only a few dollars. I can easily incorporate this versatile basic into my fall wardrobe with so many fun outfits. Like this one with this lovely red plaid skirt that I bought from ModCloth last year. See how I styled it last year in this post. This outfit was the perfect fall look, especially for apple picking.
