How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe: The Beginners Guide

unnamed-10

Susie Faux, a London boutique owner, created the term “capsule wardrobe” in the 1970s and said that the wardrobe typically would consist of “2 pairs of trousers, a dress or a skirt, a jacket, a coat, a knit, two pairs of shoes and two bags”.

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential items that don’t go out of style. These pieces can be worn in any season and can help declutter your life. The idea is to use an essential clothing piece from your capsule and mix it up with seasonal trends. For instance this dress I bought I paired with current fall trends like the glam tennis shoes and a leather jacket. This piece could be worn in the winter with leggings, boots, and a darling coat. Or simply with no layers in the summer with cute wedges.

The Process

A few rules when creating a capsule yourself is to first choose a color scheme. Start with choosing a couple of neutral base colors, black, grey, beige, white, navy. Then choose a couple of bright accent colors that coordinate with your base colors. Using a color scheme makes the wardrobe interchangeable, essentially creating pieces that will complement each other. Next, you must consider your body shape and pick pieces that fit like a glove. Also, consider your complexion and what colors compliment your skin tone. The most crucial step is buying quality fabrics that will last through a lot of wear.

How To Simplify Building A Capsule Wardrobe

I signed up for the capsule every 6 months to try it out. In my first month, I received the adorable white dress with the star details. When ordering you choose one piece from the monthly collection and then they send you a size profile. This way they have an idea of how you like your clothes to fit and your approximate measurements in order to create an item that is custom-fitted.

Free shipping, free exchanges, free returns, cancel anytime. YSTR wants to create a conscious way to consume fashion. They say that they wanted to create an option in order to take control of fast fashion depleting the Earth of natural resources. The clothes you buy in the YSTR capsules are “cut-to-order” in order to avoid waste from overproduction. The production is ethnically paid for and sweatshop free.

I encourage you to test them out. Follow them along on Instagram until something catches your eye. Then enjoy the exciting first steps of building a capsule wardrobe. Find more of my Summer Capsule Wardrobe on this blog here.
